AI Plan Stress Test Calculator

An AI plan’s included usage must fit inside the variable-cost budget left by its target gross margin. This calculator starts with net monthly revenue per user, subtracts other variable costs, and works backward to an affordable action allowance. It then tests a chosen mix of normal and heavy users. The groups are your assumptions, not measured percentiles; a profitable average does not mean every individual user is profitable.

Example scenario

Illustrative example: 20 dollars of net revenue, a 70 percent target margin, 2 dollars of other variable cost, and 0.03 dollars per accepted action leave a 4-dollar action budget. That supports 133 whole actions. A mix of 95 percent normal users at 100 actions and 5 percent heavy users at 1,000 actions averages 145 actions and 6.35 dollars of total variable cost, giving a 68.25 percent gross margin.

What the inputs mean

  • Net revenue per user / month: Enter your own value in USD. The initial value is illustrative; replace it with measured usage or a documented assumption.
  • Target gross margin: Enter your own value in %. The initial value is illustrative; replace it with measured usage or a documented assumption.
  • Other variable cost per user / month: Enter your own value in USD. The initial value is illustrative; replace it with measured usage or a documented assumption.
  • Cost per accepted action: Enter your own value in USD. The initial value is illustrative; replace it with measured usage or a documented assumption.
  • Normal-user actions / month: Enter your own value in count. The initial value is illustrative; replace it with measured usage or a documented assumption.
  • Heavy-user actions / month: Enter your own value in count. The initial value is illustrative; replace it with measured usage or a documented assumption.
  • Share of heavy users: Enter your own value in %. The initial value is illustrative; replace it with measured usage or a documented assumption.

What the result means

The output separates the affordable allowance, weighted margin, heavy-user cost and revenue needed for the target. It excludes fixed operating costs and does not guarantee business profitability.

Assumptions

  • The two user groups are scenarios, not a measured population or a P95 forecast. Action cost must already include failed attempts, retries, tools and review. Use revenue after discounts and taxes; include payment fees in other variable cost.
  • Default inputs are original illustrative examples, not provider quotes or measured customer outcomes.
  • Shared links preserve numeric assumptions and engine version; downloads do not include raw imported files.

Where the prices come from

Rates in this tool are editable user assumptions. No provider API is called and no input is refreshed automatically. Verify current billing units and terms separately before using the scenario for a purchasing decision.

Formula and methodology

Action budget = net revenue x (1 - target margin) - other variable cost. Affordable whole actions = floor(action budget / cost per accepted action), bounded below by zero. Weighted actions = normal actions x (1 - heavy-user share) + heavy actions x heavy-user share. Gross margin = (revenue - other cost - weighted action cost) / revenue. A zero action cost has no marginal-cost quota bound; zero revenue has no defined gross margin.

Interpretation guide

  • Compare alternatives with the same workload assumptions.
  • Stress-test output-heavy, retry-heavy, cache-miss, and power-user cases before committing budget.
  • Verify source links and production logs before using the estimate for billing decisions.

Limitations before production billing decisions

Treat ByteCosts calculations as planning estimates, not final billing totals. Real invoices can differ because token mix, retry rate, cache hit rate, rate limits, taxes, gateway fees, regional pricing, and negotiated discounts change the effective cost.

Verify the provider source before production billing decisions, then compare the estimate with your own logs or invoice once production traffic is live.
